Is Alibaba bigger than Amazon?

Alibaba is unquestionably the largest online and mobile commerce company in the world. It achieved this status through its dominant market share in China, and its aggressive expansion into other countries. In 2016, Alibaba’s gross merchandise volume (GMV) was $2.277 trillion, which was larger than Amazon’s $1.776 trillion GMV. However, Alibaba’s market share is declining as Amazon continues to grow.

Amazon’s market share was 26.3% in 2016, while Alibaba’s was 23.9%. In terms of online retail, Amazon is clearly the dominant player. However, Alibaba is quickly gaining ground, and it could soon be the world’s largest online and mobile commerce company.
