BJ’s Wholesale Club is a membership-only warehouse club chain operating in the eastern United States, headquartered in Westborough, Massachusetts. As of October 2015, BJ’s has 215 locations in 16 states.

BJ’s was founded in 1984 by former supermarket executives from the now-defunct chain Zayre. The first store opened in Nashua, New Hampshire on September 29, 1984. In 2005, BJ’s Wholesale Club became a wholly owned subsidiary of Leonard Green & Partners.

In 2011, BJ’s announced plans to open stores in Pennsylvania and Delaware starting in 2012. On May 23, 2012, BJ’s Wholesale Club Holdings Inc filed for an initial public offering.

The chain is comparable to Costco and Sam’s Club. Memberships are required to shop at BJ’s and are available with either a Standard Membership or a Perks Rewards Membership. The Standard Membership fee is currently $50 per year, while the Perks Rewards Membership fee is currently $110 per year.
