Is Shaw’s owned by Safeway?

Safeway Inc. is an American supermarket chain founded in 1915. It is a subsidiary of Albertsons, and headquartered in Pleasanton, California.

Safeway operates stores in 34 states and the District of Columbia under the Safeway, Vons, Pavilions, Randalls, Tom Thumb, Carrs, Eagle, Market Street, and Pak ‘n Save banners.

Safeway was founded in 1915 by Marion B. Skaggs as a grocery store in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Skaggs later merged his business with Safeway’s founder Carl Karcher to form the original Safeway Inc.

The new company grew quickly by acquiring or building more than 2,000 stores across the United States.

Safeway acquired Vons in 1997 for $2.6 billion; Randalls and Tom Thumb were acquired from Yucaipa Companies in 1999 for $1.8 billion; and then- parent company of Dominick’s Finer Foods was acquired by Safeway in 1998 for $1.2 billion.

In 2015, Safeway announced it would be acquired by Albertsons in a deal valued at $9 billion including debt.

So is Shaw’s owned by Safeway? No, Shaw’s is not owned by Safeway.
