Lidl, the German discount supermarket chain, has been expanding rapidly in the United States over the past two years. But is there a Lidl in Canada?
Lidl first arrived in the United States in June of 2017, when it opened its first store in Virginia. Since then, Lidl has expanded to over 60 stores across the East Coast. Lidl plans to have 100 stores open by the end of 2018.
So far, there are no Lidl stores in Canada. But that doesn’t mean that Lidl isn’t interested in expanding into Canada. In fact, Lidl has been eyeing the Canadian market for some time.
In 2016, Lidl was in talks to buy Canadian grocery chain Loblaw. However, those talks fell through and Loblaw was eventually bought by another grocery chain, Shoppers Drug Mart.
Lidl is also reportedly in talks to buy Canadian discount grocery chain No Frills. If those talks are successful, it’s possible that we could see Lidl stores in Canada as early as 2019.
Conclusion:
Only time will tell if we will see a Lidl in Canada. However, with the expansion of German discounter Aldi into Canada and Lidls’ ongoing interest in the Canadian market, it’s looking promising that Canadians could be shopping at Lidl sometime soon.
