What is bigger Tesco or Asda?

When it comes to Supermarkets in the UK, there are two that always seem to be compared – Tesco and Asda. Both are popular choices for shoppers up and down the country, but which one is bigger?

In terms of store numbers, Tesco is the clear winner. It has over 3,400 stores in the UK, compared to Asda’s just under 600. However, it’s worth noting that Asda’s stores are generally larger than Tesco’s, so they can offer a wider range of products.

In terms of revenue, Tesco again comes out on top. In 2018/19, it generated around £64 billion in sales, while Asda’s sales were just over £30 billion. This is partly due to the fact that Tesco offers a wider range of services than Asda, such as financial services and mobile phone contracts.

When it comes to employment, there are around 310,000 people working for Tesco in the UK, while Asda has around 150,000 employees. So not only is Tesco bigger in terms of store numbers and revenue, but it also employs more people.

There are other ways to measure the size of a supermarket, but based on these three metrics – store numbers, revenue and employment –Tesco is significantly bigger than Asda.
