Kohl’s was founded by Maxwell Kohl, who opened his first store in Brookfield, Wisconsin in 1962. He was the son of Polish immigrants.

The chain acquired 12 former A&P locations in late 2013 as part of The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company’s bankruptcy.
