Safeway is an American supermarket chain founded in 1915. It is a subsidiary of Albertsons, and its headquarters are in Pleasanton, California. As of May 2017, Safeway operates 1,638 stores in the United States.
Safeway was founded in 1915 by M.B. Skaggs in American Falls, Idaho.
Skaggs started with a single grocery store called Skaggs Cash Stores. He later bought a string of small groceries and merged them into one company, Safeway.
Safeway expanded rapidly in the 1920s, opening new stores across the United States. By 1926, it had grown to include more than 1,000 stores. In the 1930s and 1940s, Safeway continued to expand, opening new stores and acquiring new companies.
In the 1950s and 1960s, Safeway began to focus on expanding its supermarket business. It acquired several supermarket chains during this time period, including Vons and Dominick’s.
In 2015, Safeway was acquired by Albertsons. The headquarters of the combined company is in Pleasanton, California.
