Asda is set to be the first major supermarket in the UK to introduce a vegan aisle, according to The Vegan Society.
The new aisle will be trialled in selected stores from early 2019 and, if successful, rolled out across the country.
The move comes as the number of vegans in the UK has quadrupled in the last four years, with an estimated 3.5 million people now following a plant-based diet.
Asda says the new aisle will make it easier for shoppers to find vegan products, which are currently spread across different sections of its stores.
The supermarket has also pledged to increase its range of vegan products, with plans to launch more than 50 new own-brand lines in 2019.
The Vegan Society says Asda’s decision is a “game-changer” that will make veganism more accessible and convenient for shoppers.
“This is a truly momentous occasion,” says Vegan Society president Jasmine Hemsley.
“For years, vegans have had to seek out products hidden amongst aisles of animal-based goods.”
“This can often be off-putting for those beginning their vegan journey and puts many people off making the switch altogether.”
“Veganism is no longer a niche lifestyle choice – it is a mainstream movement that is here to stay,” she adds.
Asda’s move comes as other Supermarkets are also increasing their vegan ranges in response to growing demand. Waitrose recently announced plans to launch a dedicated vegan section in all of its stores by early 2019, while Sainsbury’s has also said it is increasing its vegan offering.
