Who is Lowe’s owned by?
Lowe’s is an American home improvement retailer that is headquartered in Mooresville, North Carolina. The company is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange, and it is also a member of the S&P 500 Index. As of February 3, 2019, Lowe’s operated 2,015 home improvement and hardware stores in the United States and Canada.
Lowe’s is the second-largest hardware chain in the United States after The Home Depot and ahead of Menard’s. Globally, Lowe’s is also the second-largest hardware chain, again after The Home Depot but ahead of the UK’s Kingfisher plc (which owns B&Q).
The company was founded in 1946 by Lucius Smith Lowe (1879–1940) in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, and was inherited by his daughter Ruth Buchan upon his death in 1940. Buchan quickly moved the headquarters to Charlotte, North Carolina to be closer to suppliers.
In 1954, Buchan died and her husband Carl Buchan (no relation to James L. Buchan) took over as president. Carl increased Lowe’s advertising budget and expanded the company into new markets throughout the southeastern United States. By 1960, Buchan had moved the headquarters to Mooresville where it remains today.
In 1961, Buchan negotiated with Buster Haas (owner of Haaston Corporation) to purchase a portion of his lumber business with Haas retaining ownership of a sawmill in South Carolina. The resulting partnership between Lowe’s and Haas Lumber Company was recorded as being one of the first inter-racial business ventures in Mooresville.
