Why did Sainsbury’s want to merge with ASDA?

Sainsbury’s and Asda are two of the UK’s biggest Supermarkets. They both sell a wide range of food and household items, and have a large number of stores across the country.

Sainsbury’s is the second largest supermarket chain in the UK, with around 16% of the market share. Asda is the third largest, with around 10% of the market share. Together, they would have around 26% of the market share, which would make them larger than their main competitor, Tesco.

Sainsbury’s and Asda have both been struggling in recent years. They have been losing market share to Tesco, Aldi, and Lidl. A merger would allow them to cut costs and become more competitive.

The UK’s competition regulator has said that it is “likely” to approve the merger. However, it is still conducting an investigation and has not yet made a final decision.
