How long do packages stay in USPS distribution centers?

When a package arrives at a USPS distribution center, it is scanned for tracking information. Once the package is scanned, the distribution center will place the package in one of two classes: Priority Mail or Express Mail.

Priority Mail packages will generally stay in the distribution center for three days, while Express Mail packages will generally stay in the distribution center for one day. However, there are certain packages that are considered “time-sensitive” and are given a higher priority and will stay in the distribution center for two or three days.
