Safeway is a grocery store chain in the United States and Canada. It is a subsidiary of Albertsons. As of May 2015, it operated 1,600 stores in the United States and Canada.
The company was founded in 1915 in American Falls, Idaho, by Marion B. Skaggs.
Skaggs owned several small grocery stores in Idaho and Nevada. He merged his stores with a chain called Safeway and moved the headquarters to Oakland, California. The new Safeway had annual sales of $175 million.
In 1926, Skaggs sold Safeway to a group of investors led by Sam Seelig, who took the company public. Seelig expanded Safeway into Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Montana, and British Columbia.
In 1929, Safeway merged with a company called Vons Grocery Company. The merger made Safeway the largest grocery store chain in California.
