If the United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) discovers drugs or drug paraphernalia in a package that is being mailed or delivered through the mail, it will conduct an investigation to determine whether or not to charge the sender or recipient with a federal crime.
If the package is determined to contain drugs, the sender or recipient may be charged with a federal crime, such as possession with intent to distribute, trafficking, or importing drugs into the United States. If convicted, the sender or recipient could face a lengthy prison sentence and significant fines.
If the package is determined to contain only drug paraphernalia, the sender or recipient may be charged with a state crime, such as possession of drug paraphernalia. If convicted, the sender or recipient could face a misdemeanor charge and/or a fine.
