Lowe’s Home Improvement is a chain of home improvement and appliance stores in the United States. It is the second-largest hardware chain in the United States after The Home Depot and is headquartered in Mooresville, North Carolina.
The company was founded in 1946 by Carl Buchan as a single store in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina. Buchan quickly expanded the company by opening additional stores.
In 1961, Buchan retired and sold the company to his daughter, Ruth, and her husband, Jim Lowe. The company was first listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1979.
Today, Lowe’s operates over 2,200 stores across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The company employs over 300,000 people and is publicly traded on the NYSE under the symbol LOW.
In 2018, Lowe’s was ranked #24 on Fortune magazine’s list of the 500 largest companies in America.
