Asda is a British supermarket retailer, headquartered in Leeds, West Yorkshire. The company was founded in 1949 when the supermarket owning Asquith family merged with the Associated Dairies company of Yorkshire.
It expanded into London and Scotland in the 1970s and 1980s, and acquired Allied Carpets and then Gateway Foodmarkets in the 1990s. In 1999, it was acquired by the US company Walmart and became part of their international operations
As of 2019, Asda had 632 stores across the UK, including 147 from the acquisition of Netto UK. Asda’s locations are mainly in larger towns and cities, although there are some stores in smaller towns. In June 2015, Asda announced plans to open up to 15 ‘smaller format’ stores, called ‘Local’, across the UK
