Lidl, the German discount grocery store, is expanding its U.S. presence and plans to open its first Maryland store in Anne Arundel County.
Lidl US, LLC, announced Thursday that it has purchased a 12-acre parcel of land at the intersection of Route 3 and Crain Highway in Gambrills for an undisclosed price. The company said it plans to build a 36,000-square-foot store on the site, which is currently occupied by an office building and a parking lot.
The announcement comes less than a week after Lidl opened its first U. stores in Virginia and North Carolina. The company now operates 10 stores on the East Coast, from New Jersey to Florida.
Lidl plans to open 100 stores across the East Coast over the next year as part of its expansion into the United States. The company entered the U. market last year when it purchased 27 Best Market grocery stores on Long Island, New York.
Lidl’s arrival in Maryland is part of the company’s larger plan to compete with other discount grocers such as Aldi and Whole Foods Market. Lidl US CEO Brendan Proctor said in a statement that the company is “thrilled” to bring its “unique combination of high quality products at unbeatable prices” to Anne Arundel County.
Proctor said Lidl plans to open additional stores in Maryland “in the coming years.” The company did not say when it plans to open the Gambrills store.
Lidl’s expansion into the United States comes as the German grocery chain is facing increased competition at home from rivals such as Amazon and Walmart. Lidl has more than 10,000 stores in 27 countries worldwide and reported sales of €50 billion ($56 billion) last year.
